Christchurch Baptist Church's Project Five:One was a £2.5 million redevelopment of the church and community facilities in central Christchurch.

The project involved the demolition of an existing two-storey building and construction of a new steel-framed, two-storey church and community centre.

Completed in just 13 months, the project created a significantly larger and more flexible facility for the church and wider community. The redevelopment increased the overall internal floor area from approximately 677m² to 1,116m².

The project was delivered within a tight area in the centre of Christchurch, with local residents and businesses surrounding the site, creating several logistical considerations throughout construction.

A Hammond & Sons acted as main contractor, with Acorn Plastering Contractors appointed to deliver a comprehensive internal drylining and finishing package.

Acorn's Role

Acorn was responsible for a wide-ranging package of internal works, covering multiple disciplines across the new building.

Our scope included:

  • Drylining

  • Plastering

  • Metal stud partitions

  • MF ceilings

  • Suspended ceilings

  • Acoustic ceiling systems

  • Insulation

  • Resilient bar systems

  • Plywood pattressing

  • Access panels

The package incorporated specified British Gypsum and Ecophon systems, including insulated plasterboard, metal 'C' stud partitions with deflection heads, British Gypsum Quattro 41 acoustic ceilings and Ecophon Focus DS suspended ceilings.

A range of insulation systems were also installed within partitions and ceilings, alongside skim plaster finishes and one-coat plastering.

The Result

Acorn successfully completed its works as planned, contributing to the successful completion of the new church and community centre.

The finished facility provides Christchurch Baptist Church and the wider community with a modern, versatile space designed to support church activities, community events and local groups.

The main contractor described the finished development as a fantastic milestone for the local community, with the completed result reflecting the work of the wider project team.

 

A Complete Internal Package

This project demonstrates Acorn's ability to deliver a substantial, multi-discipline internal package for a main contractor.

By bringing drylining, plastering, partitions, ceilings and insulation together under one package, Acorn was able to provide a coordinated approach across a significant proportion of the internal finishing works.

For main contractors, this means fewer separate trades to coordinate and one experienced contractor responsible for delivering multiple connected elements of the internal build.
